The driving license step by step:

Step 1: The learner’s license.

The learner’s license allows driving a car accompanied by a person having his regular driving license for at least 2 years.

The objective is to allow the apprentice to practice and gain road experience in a supervised and safer way.

A minimum of 12 months is required after obtaining a learner’s license before being able to pass the probationary license examination.

Obligations of the learner’s license.

  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Always be accompanied by a driver holding a regular license for at least 2 years.
  • Respect the zero tolerance for drinking and driving.
  • Do not accumulate more than 4 demerit points.
  • Drive only in the province of Quebec.

The apprenticeship permit is valid for 18 months and may be renewed for an additional 12 months.

Step 2: The probationary license.

After having been a learner permit holder for at least 12 months, the SAAQ practical examination stage is available for obtaining the probationary license.

The first test is the one that allows driving alone on the roads!

Probationary license obligations:

  • Respect the zero tolerance for drunk driving.
  • Do not accumulate more than 4 demerit points.

How to get your learner’s license?
